Great Depression and its Social Effects

    Table of contents
    1. 1.  The Great Depression affected the lives of countless Americans in a variety of ways.  Many men, women, and children lost their homes, jobs, savings, businesses, property, even lives.  Some lost their entire way of life and were forced to break up their families in order to search for ways to survive.  These were desperate times in which nearly one-third of America’s work-force was unemployed and there was little anyone could do about it.
    2. 2. You mission is to create a work that represents your knowledge and understanding of just how badly many Americans were affected by the Great Depression.  In this creation you will use one of the following methods to express in detail some specific tragedies that Americans were facing and the direct actions they took in an attempt to overcome those hardships.  You may choose to do one of the following to represent your ideas:
    3. 3. write a song
    4. 4. write a poem
    5. 5. draw a picture or create a work of art
    6. 6. write a cartoon strip
    7. 7. create a collage of images with a central social (people) theme about the Great Depression
    8. 8. Create a detailed outline of the causes and effects of the Great depression (1 page)
    9. 9.  Your creation will be worth 20 points:
    10. 10.  -       15 points for describing in detail how the Depression affected at least one group of people in 3 different ways
    11. 11. -       5 points for originality, effort, and creativity.  Make your pictures colorful, your poems attention grabbing, your outlines detailed and descriptive.  No matter what format you choose, use specific and accurate information.
    12. 12. There are markers, colored pencils and plain white paper available in the classroom.  Drawings should not be drawn with pencil and turned in on lined paper!

This is really more of an summative assessment activity than a lesson plan, but I found it to be very useful with students.
